Abridge’s Principles for Building Trusted AI in Healthcare

Abridge was founded on the idea that healthcare starts with a conversation. The clinician-patient conversation is the first step for delivering and documenting care but also for building understanding, connection, and trust. It serves as the ground truth for all the work that happens downstream: referrals, prior authorization, follow-up care, billing, and so much more.
At Abridge, our vision has always been to leverage artificial intelligence to support clinicians at the point of conversation to ease the burden of all the downstream work. We believe this is one of the most powerful ways of changing healthcare as a whole.
Our design approach envisions assistance as a fundamentally humble feature, which respects the role of clinician judgment and ultimately enables better human-to-human conversation.
We are guided by three core principles:
- Conversation Comes First: At Abridge, we believe that what happens in the room between a clinician and a patient is the most valuable signal in healthcare. We don’t just overlay AI onto clinical workflows; we engineer it to elevate the most human part of medicine. Our enterprise-grade AI platform is designed to be tightly integrated and only surface insights to help clinicians and not to distract them. This intentional design ensures that the connection between patient and clinician remains uninterrupted. That’s what it means to power deeper understanding in healthcare.
- Workflow Drives the Design: Healthcare workflows and processes currently done by hand often have a deep wisdom behind them. Our product and engineering teams have designed Abridge to fit naturally into those existing rhythms. Abridge integrates seamlessly into existing workflows and aligns with how care teams already work, unlocking value without friction.
- Transparency Builds Trust: Building a vision for artificial intelligence in healthcare that puts the judgment of the clinician at its center requires designing systems that are easily auditable. With Linked Evidence, Abridge-generated draft clinical documentation is traceable to the source conversation. We make it easy for clinicians to verify, question, and trust the technology that supports their work.
One example of these principles in action is Abridge’s approach to developing clinical decision support solutions grounded in the context of the conversation, which we recently announced at HLTH.
With our first high-quality data partner Wolters Kluwer, Abridge is integrating UpToDate’s gold-standard content to unlock evidence-based clinical decision support directly within existing clinical documentation workflows. Like all of our products, Abridge is building for enterprise-grade scalability that meets the security, reliability, and auditability demands of the largest health systems.
As we look to the future, our focus at Abridge remains on deepening our partnerships and expanding what’s possible at the point of conversation. Every conversation we support, every workflow we simplify, and every clinician we empower, brings us one step closer to a healthcare system that feels more connected, more efficient, and more human.
