The Evolution of Enterprise AI at Sutter: A Timeline
In 2024, when Sutter Health first piloted Abridge, it was among just a handful of integrated health systems making significant investments in implementing AI. Today, half of healthcare leaders now report their organizations have already deployed AI, and more than 80% have deployed their first use cases to clinicians and staff.
Sutter was—and still is—ahead of the game.
Sutter Health, serving 3.6 million patients (source) with approximately 64,000 clinicians, staff, and affiliated physicians (source), has scaled one of the widest and deepest deployments of AI in healthcare: unlimited enterprise-wide access to Abridge, spanning outpatient, emergency department, and inpatient care, across all specialties. Expanding beyond documentation support, Sutter Health and Abridge will be deploying more innovations regularly, like Clinical Decision Support, which went live in July 2026.

In many ways, the story of Sutter Health and AI is the story of Abridge. We carefully piloted our technology together; we have developed and built it together; we have scaled it across users and use cases together; and we’re just getting started.
Below is a timeline of the Abridge-Sutter relationship, a blueprint for successful deployment of AI in healthcare, driven by focused leaders, clinician champions, and the thousands of users themselves.
March 2024: Partnership Announcement
Sutter and Abridge announce a partnership. Sutter Health becomes one of the first major provider organizations willing to test the assumption that ambient AI would save clinicians time.

April 2024: Pilot Launch
Over four months of initial deployment, nearly 100 users generated over 44,000 clinical notes, an average of about 116 per clinician, per month.

August 2024: Enterprise Deployment
Sutter Health expands Abridge access to 400 clinicians.

January 2025: Fast Growth, Executive Focus
Nearly 1,000 clinicians at Sutter Health are now regularly using Abridge, reflecting an over 300%+ increase in just three months. Dr. Veena Jones, who led the implementation internally, is promoted to Vice President and Chief Medical Information Officer, signaling the importance of AI to the future of Sutter Health.

February 2025: Sharing the Story
Abridge and Sutter Health release a behind-the-scenes video, "Taking Back Pajama Time," putting human faces on the growing user base. The video tells the stories of clinicians spending less time on notes after hours and more time with their families.

April 2025: Inpatient Launch and Second Enterprise Expansion
Sutter Health becomes one of the first health systems to pilot Abridge Inside for Inpatient, extending the platform beyond outpatient care and into hospital workflows.
In addition, after reaching 100%+ utilization rate among licensed clinicians, Sutter Health increases its Abridge footprint to 1,800 users across 70+ specialties.

May 2025: Independent Validation of Clinical Efficiency
JAMA Network Open publishes a study on the Sutter Health-Abridge partnership, led by Dr. Cheryl Stults, giving the internal results an outside, peer-reviewed stamp: ambient AI measurably improves clinician wellbeing.

Sutter Health clinicians have now generated one million notes with Abridge, ranking the health system in the top 2% of all Abridge partners.
October 2025: Third Enterprise Expansion
After again reaching 100%+ utilization rate among licensed clinicians, Sutter Health expands to 3,000+ Abridge users across care settings and specialties
April 2026: Independent Validation of Clinician Experience
Journal of the American Medical Informatics Association publishes a study gathering qualitative feedback from Sutter Health clinicians. Their reflections reinforce what the data show: Abridge helps clinicians focus on what’s most important, their patients.
