Why CHRISTUS Health Expanded with AI partner Abridge: Continuous Innovation

A conversation with Dr. Tim Barker, System Medical Director and Chief Medical Information Officer of Ambulatory Care at CHRISTUS Health

After several years of success with Abridge across ambulatory care, CHRISTUS Health recently expanded its partnership with Abridge, moving to an unlimited enterprise agreement while also introducing AI into inpatient care and launching a pilot for nursing documentation.

About CHRISTUS Health

Headquartered in Irving, Texas

60+ hospitals and 600+ care sites across the U.S., Mexico, Chile, and Colombia

15,000+ clinicians

Since first deploying Abridge, clinicians at CHRISTUS have consistently described the technology as "life-changing." But for Dr. Tim Barker, System Medical Director and Chief Medical Information Officer of Ambulatory Care, the decision to expand the partnership wasn't based on early success alone. It reflected years of continuous product innovation, a collaborative partnership, and growing confidence that Abridge would continue evolving alongside the needs of clinicians.

In this conversation, Dr. Barker shares why CHRISTUS expanded its partnership with Abridge, why leadership invested even more deeply, and how continuous innovation has become a crucial factor in evaluating enterprise AI.

In Conversation with Dr. Tim Barker

When it came time to renew your partnership with Abridge, what gave CHRISTUS the confidence to invest even more deeply?

We've had an awesome experience with Abridge from day one. The most common comment I hear from physicians is, "This is life-changing." That really hasn't changed.

What has changed is the product itself. This is a different Abridge than when we first started. It was awesome then, but it's tremendously awesome now. For us, that was a big part of the decision.

We weren't just evaluating where the product was today—we were looking at how much it had evolved since we first implemented it. Every year we've seen meaningful improvements, and that gave us confidence that Abridge would continue innovating alongside us.

We still have ideas for future enhancements, but those are relatively minor compared to everything that's already been accomplished. The product just keeps getting better.

How important was Abridge's pace of innovation in your decision?

That was probably the biggest differentiator. I'm really impressed with Abridge's development cycle. From my perspective, Abridge is so far ahead of the others. Every month we're seeing meaningful new capabilities released.

What stands out is how responsive the team is to customer feedback. We'll say, "I wish Abridge could do this," and then a few months later, it does.

That creates a different level of confidence. You know the product isn't standing still. It's continuously evolving in ways that make clinicians more efficient and improve the experience for patients. As a health system, that's incredibly valuable because our needs don't stay the same either.

Which product innovations have had the greatest impact for your clinicians?

Specialty-specific notes were a huge step forward, especially for emergency medicine. That was a major reason our emergency department rollout was so successful because the documentation better reflects the way ED physicians think and work.

The patient context Abridge brings into the workflow has also made a tremendous difference. More recently, capabilities like saved prompts and preferred note settings have given clinicians even more control over how documentation is generated.

But I would say the biggest, jaw-dropping feature is the integration with Clinical Decision Support. That's something our clinicians have been amazed by. They're discussing a complex patient, and right there within the workflow are relevant prompts they can immediately use. It's not interruptive. It's simply there when you need it. That's probably been the most impactful new capability we've seen.

Beyond the technology itself, what gave you confidence to expand?

The partnership has been just as important as the product. Operationally, moving to an unlimited enterprise agreement removes an enormous administrative burden. Under our previous licensing model, we spent a lot of time managing licenses, provisioning users, tracking spreadsheets, and allocating costs across departments. Now we can focus on adoption instead of administration.

It also allows us to support clinicians we couldn't easily support before. Our hospitalists have been asking for Abridge for quite some time. In fact, just before this conversation, one of our hospitalist leaders reached out asking when they could get access.

We're also excited to make Abridge available to physicians who practice in our hospitals but aren't employed by CHRISTUS. That's something that differentiates us in our communities and makes CHRISTUS an even more attractive place to practice.

As we scale, support becomes even more important. Knowing Abridge will serve as the first stop for user support, and that the team is continuing to invest in streamlined onboarding and training, gives us confidence that we can successfully roll this out at enterprise scale.

Why was now the right time to expand into inpatient care and nursing?

We've done a lot to support physician well-being, and we wanted to extend that same support to nurses. The product has matured to the point where we felt confident beginning that journey. We'll start with a nursing pilot across three units, and if that goes well, we'll want to expand significantly.

For inpatient physicians, the demand is already there. Our emergency physicians have had such a positive experience that our hospitalists are eager to begin using Abridge as well. As more inpatient capabilities become available, this feels like the right time to bring AI into the rest of acute care.

Looking ahead, what does success look like for CHRISTUS over the next year?

Success means seeing the majority of our hospitalists using Abridge. It means successfully expanding into nursing. And it means making Abridge available to physicians across our medical staff—not just employed physicians—so that practicing at CHRISTUS becomes even more attractive.

We're also focused on making adoption as easy as possible. The easier onboarding becomes, the faster clinicians can experience value. Accessible training resources and strong support will be critical as we continue to scale.

Ultimately, that's what gives me confidence in where we're headed. Abridge works well. The product continues to evolve quickly, the partnership has been outstanding, and we're excited to continue expanding together.
